Myths Surrounding Speech-Language Therapy for Adults

Even though speech-language therapy is often assumed as something only children can benefit from, adults should also speak to a therapist if they have a speech impediment issue. There are a lot of myths about speech therapy for adults. Here is a look at some of the most prevailing myths and the actual facts you should know.

Myth: By the time someone reaches adulthood, it is too late for speech-language therapy.

You are never too old to receive speech-language therapy. It is true that it can be easier for children to work through speech impediments simply because they have not been following the same speech-language actions and understandings for as many years. Adult therapy may take a little longer, but it can be effective just the same. Another note, even people who may have had some form of speech therapy as a child may see additional benefits as an adult.

Myth: Most speech therapists only work with children.

You can find some speech therapists that work only with children for sure. However, the majority of these professionals will work with people of all ages, including older adults. The same mechanisms that can affect how a child speaks and learns to speak can be at play with adults, so the typical therapy methodology is a lot alike whether for a child or for an adult.

Myth: All speech issues are the same.

There are several reasons why people may have a speech impediment. For example, certain muscles and soft tissues in your mouth can cause a speech impediment. However, some people have speech problems related to issues that are not so physical in nature. For example, a person with a stuttering issue can be related to social anxiety or even a neurological issue. Regardless of why someone has a speech issue, they can benefit from speech therapy. Every situation can be different, of course, but most people can achieve some level of improvement.

Myth: Adults who need speech-language therapy will likely need it for the rest of their lives.

Speech-language therapy can last for a long time regardless of age. Nevertheless, you can expect that eventually, you will reach a point when the therapy has offered the most advantages possible and there would be no reason to continue. Since every individual can have a different experience, it is difficult to say how long therapy will take.
